First death due to COVID-19 reported in southern Illinois

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) — The first death caused by complications of COVID-19 has been reported in southern Illinois.

The victim was a woman in her 90s and was a resident at a skilled care nursing facility in Jackson County. She had been receiving treatment at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

A second resident of that same skilled nursing facility, Manor Court, a part of Liberty Village of Carbondale, has also tested positive for COVID-19. The second resident, a woman in her 80s, is currently recieving treatment at SIH Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Roughly 80 elderly people live in the Manor Court facility. No other cases of COVID-19 have yet been reported.
