New cases of COVID-19, additional deaths reported in southern Illinois Tuesday

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WJPF) — Five new cases of COVID-19 were announced in southern Illinois Tuesday along with two additional deaths.

The new cases came out of Jackson (1), Jefferson (1), Pulaski (1), and Williamson (2) counties. The deaths were residents of Jackson (1) and Union (1) counties.

Statewide, the Illinois Department of Public Health announced 623 new cases of COVID-19 Tuesday, including 72 additional deaths.

Currently, IDPH is reporting a total of 133,639 cases, including 6,398 deaths, in 101 counties in Illinois.

The seven-day statewide positivity rate is 3%.

At this time, 26 men incarcerated at East Moline Correctional Center are confirmed positive for COVID-19. Three staff members at the facility also tested positive for the virus and one has recovered.
