Wednesday, the St. Louis Cardinals made a surprising announcement. Closer Jordan Hicks will be a part of the 5-man rotation.
Hicks was forced off the mound last May when he had discomfort in his surgically-repaired right elbow. He was expected back at some point in the season but in August was shut down by the big league club.
Hicks had made it known to management during his recovery that he wanted to make a return as a starter.
“Couple things came to mind when we reported to spring,” said Cardinals skipper Oli Marmol. “One, his health. Two, making sure he felt he was in control of his outings everytime he was out there and not speeding things up.
“The third was the maturity thing. Are you going to be able to handle starting every five days and the in-between time and making sure that you’re ready both physically and mentally for that start? He’s more ready than ever and we’re looking forward to it.”
The experiment may be worthwhile. Hicks started 34 of his 37 minor league games through 168.2 innings.
Hicks is expected to make his first major league start next Tuesday on April 12th against the Kansas City Royals.
