WILLIAMSON COUNTY, Ill. (WJPF) – A man is dead after an armed confrontation with police in rural Williamson County.
At about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederch says a deputy was dispatched to Devil’s Fork Road.
Arriving at the scene, the sheriff’s office says a man approached the deputy as he was getting out of his squad car. The man produced a rifle, continued walking in the deputy’s direction and then pointed the gun at the deputy. The deputy shot the man; he was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputy was not hurt.
The incident is being investigated by the Illinois State Police. The name of the deceased has not been released.
