MARION, Ill. (WJPF) – Over 30 Marion Junior High School students were treated for welts and bruises after they shot with water filled pellets on while school grounds.
The incident happened at about 10:45 a.m. Wednesday while the students were on an outdoor track during P.E. class. The projectiles, police say, were fired from the window of a passing car.
“This was an isolated incident” said Marion Police Chief David Fitts. “The rumor that got back to me is this was a Tik Tok challenge. I don’t fully understand the purpose of that, but that’s what it was.”
Three suspects, two 18-year-olds and a 22-year-old, were arrested Wednesday. Each suspect faces 38 counts of aggravated battery.
Police say the weapon used was an Orbeez gel blaster, a toy, marketed to children and teenagers, which fires round, plastic, water-filled pellets at a high rate of speed.
