MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WJPF) – It’s 98th anniversary of the 1925 Tri-State Tornado.
The F-5 twister cut a path of destruction 219 miles long across three states, beginning in southeast Missouri, barreling across southern Illinois, and ending in Indiana. The system stayed on the ground for over 3 hours with peak winds estimated at over 300 mph.
234 people were killed in Murphysboro alone. 33 died at the DeSoto school.
Over 2,000 people were injured and over 15,000 homes were destroyed.
