A 13-year-old runaway led police on a high-speed chase Sunday that ended in Johnston City.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies were alerted to a reckless driver in the eastbound lanes of Illinois 13 near Spillway Road. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which at one time, reached speeds in excess of 100 mph. The chase continued on Interstate 57, with the driver starting in the southbound lanes and then switching to the northbound lanes. He eventually failed to negotiate the I-57 exit at Johnston City and crashed. He fled on foot but was apprehended.
The pickup he was driving was reportedly stolen out of Carbondale.
