ISP trooper injured in shooting

An Illinois State Police trooper was injured and a suspect has been killed in an exchange of gunfire on Interstate 64 near Mt. Vernon early this morning.

According to an ISP news release, troopers responded to a call to assist a motorist in the eastbound lanes of the interstate at mile post 72. An altercation occurred and a male subject displayed a firearm.

Gunfire was exchanged between the suspect and troopers. The trooper was injured and taken to a regional hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The suspect reportedly is deceased.

The incident happened around 3 a.m.
