CARBONDALE, Ill. – Saluki Athletics is proud to announce the launch of the Saluki Reading Program, a community initiative aimed at connecting Saluki student-athletes with local elementary students to build strong reading skills and a lifelong love for books.
“We are committed to giving back and supporting our community,” said SIU athletic director Tim Leonard. “The Saluki Reading Program will create opportunities for our student-athletes and local students to connect and develop a passion for books. We look forward to celebrating the success of our future Salukis and the positive impact of this program throughout Southern Illinois.”
Elementary students grades K-8 are encouraged to read for 20 minutes every day throughout November. Students who complete the reading challenge will earn a free ticket to both a men’s and women’s basketball game. Participating classrooms also have the opportunity to enter a poster contest for a chance to win prizes – such as a pizza party with Grey Dawg, a visit from Saluki student-athletes and team posters.
Michael Black, assistant AD for marketing, expressed enthusiasm for the program, stating, “We truly believe there are no limits to what our student-athletes and local youth can achieve as individuals, teammates and community members. This program is part of our continued commitment to education and community engagement.”
