Carbondale police find stolen gun, controlled substance during traffic stop

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) – A traffic stop in Carbondale ended with an arrest on drug and weapons charges.

Carbondale Police say officers pulled over Bernard Cole, 40, of Marion, around 11:40 p.m. Saturday because his vehicle’s license plates had been suspended. A computer check revealed that Cole’s driver’s license had also been suspended.

Carbondale Police say during the traffic stop, officers found a stolen gun and a controlled substance in the vehicle.

Bernard Cole was taken to the Jackson County Jail on charges of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm, possession of a controlled substance, and driving while license suspended. He was ordered to be detained until trial. His next court date is scheduled for April 28, 2024.
