Netflix has confirmed ‘Happy Gilmore 2’, the sequel to the beloved 1996 golf comedy “Happy Gilmore” with original star Adam Sandler set to return. Sandler himself had previously shared that the sequel film was in the works, but at the time he’d only written a first draft of the screenplay. Announced by Netflix, Happy Gilmore 2 will indeed be happening and will see Sandler return as the original star.
Sandler starred in and co-wrote the original “Happy Gilmore,” which was directed by Dennis Dugan. Sandler played the titular Happy Gilmore, a hockey player with anger management issues who discovers he’s also got a talent for golf. Happy joins the golf tour circuit to win money to save his grandmother’s house and faces off against an arrogant pro named Shooter McGavin, played by Christopher McDonald. The supporting cast also included Julie Bowen and Carl Weathers.
Considered one of Sandler’s most famous and popular films to date, ‘Happy Gilmore’ opened to nearly $40 million USD at the global box office in 1996.
