State of Illinois to buy out nearly 40 flood damaged East St. Louis properties

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (WJPF) – The State of Illinois will spend nearly 2.6 million dollars to buy approximately 40 East St. Louis homes that experience repeat flooding and flood damage.

The money comes through the Department of Natural Resources’ Flood Hazard Mitigation Program.

The homes purchased by the state were badly damaged in July 2022 when 7 inches of rain fell over a two day period, causing a stream to overflow its banks.

After demolition, plans are for the land to become public green space, such as parks, trails, or athletic fields, benefitting the entire community.
