Juveniles crash stolen car near Herrin Junior High

HERRIN, Ill. (WJPF) – Two juveniles were arrested Wednesday morning after crashing a stolen car near the Herrin Junior High School.

The car was stolen out of Mounds City, roughly an hour drive south of where it was wrecked.

The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office says they became aware of the situation after the vehicle was involved in a hit and run accident around 7:30 a.m. near the intersection of Illinois Route 148 and Grassy Road.  Police found the damaged vehicle a few miles away, near the intersection of Route 148 and Route 13. From there, they chased it into Herrin, where the driver crashed into a stopped vehicle at the intersection of Stotlar Road and South 13th Street.

Both the Herrin Junior High School and the nearby Herrin Hospital were placed on brief lockdowns out of an abundance of caution.
