Runaway car stopped by sheriff’s deputy

CARTERVILLE, Ill. (WJPF) – No injuries reported after a car with malfunctioning brakes had to be stopped by police.

Around 2:00 a.m. Monday, the driver called 9-1-1 telling dispatchers that her car brakes were not working and she could not get the car to stop.

Williamson County Sheriff’s Deputies caught up to the car in Carterville on Old Route 13 at Division Street. While traveling at speeds of about 30 miles per hour, deputies initiated a rolling roadblock, positioning a squad car directly in front of the out of control sedan and then gently applying the brakes, eventually bringing both vehicles to a stop. The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle sufficed no damage and very minor damage was incurred by the runaway car.

Williamson County Sheriff Jeff Diederich says the incident happened less than a mile from Crab Orchard Lake and the actions of the deputy likely prevented the car from ending up in the water.
