SIU Softball’s McKenzie Newcomb earns second MVC Newcomer of the Week award

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Senior McKenzie Newcomb of the Southern Illinois University softball team has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, as announced by the league on Monday.

Newcomb earned the accolade after going 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA across two appearances against Belmont this past weekend. The senior gave up two hits, no runs, two walks, and had four strikeouts in 6.2 scoreless innings pitched.

Belmont had an opposing batting average of .091 against Newcomb.

This is the second time the senior has earned MVC Newcomer of the Week honors, as she also received the award on March 11. Newcomb’s most recent recognition from the Valley came on March 18 when she was named the MVC Pitcher of the Week.

Newcomb is now 11-5 with a 1.95 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and has 89 strikeouts as opposed to 15 walks across 86.0 innings pitched on the season.

Southern Illinois (18-15, 10-1) is in first place in the Valley and will host Indiana State this weekend, with game one scheduled for 5 p.m. on Friday.
