Illinois House Bill 1237, now known as the Mascot Ban bill, made its first appearance in the Illinois Senate on Monday. The bill had its first reading.
A bill must be read 3 times before it can be voted on.
Schools in Illinois K-12 would be affected by the bill which would prohibit schools from using a native name logo, or mascot. Schools would be allowed to continue using uniforms or other materials bearing a native name, logo, or mascot that were purchased on or before the effective date of the amendatory Act until September 1, 2028.
Additionally, House Bill 3527, which would prohibit school mascots deemed as a discriminatory disability mascot, made its first appearance in the State Senate this past Thursday (April 10). HB 3527 had its first reading before being referred to Assignments.
HB 1237 could affect area schools including the Du Quoin Indians, Johnston City Indians, and Shawnee Redskins. HB 3527 was created specifically with the Freeburg Midgets in mind.
