Illinois Senate committee passes plan to end “exit bonuses”

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WJPF) — An Illinois Senate Committee has unanimously passed Comptroller Susana Mendoza’s plan to end so-called “exit bonuses” for lawmakers who resign before the end of their term.

SB-2456 would end the practice of paying lawmakers for the entire month when they resign their seat on the first of the month. Instead, in cases of resignation or appointment, lawmakers would be paid on a pro-rated basis.

The bill was prompted by recent cases involving former State Senator Martin Sandoval and former State Representative Luis Arroyo. Both are under federal investigation. Both resigned on the first day of the month. Both were paid for the entire month.
