John A. Logan guard Jay Scrubb was named the National Junior College Athletic Association Player of the Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches on Wednesday. He also earned First Team NABC All-America honors. Scrubb averaged 21.9 ppg, 6.8 rpg, and 2.7 assists last season while shooting 50.1% from the field.
“It’s not a player that comes along very often,” Kyle Smithpeters, coach of the John A. Logan Volunteers, says about Scrubb. “We’re extremely fortunate to see him improve and see his maturity improve.”
Scrubb is committed to Louisville next season but is first testing the waters in the NBA Draft could forego the rest of his college eligibility if drafted.
“A lot of people, I don’t think just get how young Jay really is,” Smithpeters says. “He’s only 19 years old… this could have been his freshman year. He’s just so young. With that being said, you know, you go to the NBA you’re going to be competing against 25 to 29 year old men.”
