Sunday marked the end of a whirlwind week for Marion junior Sarah Capel, who won four tournaments.
The week began with the Rend Lake Golf Tournament on Tuesday, where Capel finished on top with a one-over par score of 73 strokes.
From there the Marion Wildcat traveled to the St. Louis area to compete in the Gateway PGA event at Far Oaks in Caseyville on Thursday. Capel finished the 18-hole event with a score of 80.
Just a day later, Capel was closer to home in Benton. There she won the Benton Golf Cup with a score of 76.
Fast forward to Sunday evening, Capel was standing atop the mountain one more time in West Frankfort for the Southern Illinois Golf Association Championship. On Saturday, Capel shot a 73 and Sunday she shot a 75 to earn her fourth straight tournament victory – all within a week’s time.
“We are thrilled to see all the success that Sarah is having this summer. For some of us at MHS, it’s no surprise. She had a great sophomore season last year and we saw her progression each week throughout the year,” says Marion Athletic Director Ryan Goodisky.
“She’s healthy now, after recovering from an off season injury, and she has always been a hard worker. I think that’s why we’re seeing all of her recent success. I know personally I can’t wait to see what her and our team accomplishes during the next two years.”
Capel has won a total of five tournaments this summer; her first tournament victory came on June 11 at the Gateway Junior League Tournament at Dalhouise Golf Club in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
