CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) — A now-former employee of the Carbondale Post Office has been charged with embezzling mail .
33-year-old Athens Shorey, also known as Athens DeMartini, of Cobden was indicted Tuesday.
Federal prosecutors say that from May 23, 2020 – May 27, 2020, Shorey embezzled thirteen pieces of mail, two of which were pieces of mail sent by banks.
After the embezzlement was discovered, Shorey voluntarily quit her job as a letter carrier.
If convicted, Shorey faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $500,000.
