Monday night, the Murphysboro Red Devils and Herrin Tigers met in an SIRR Ohio Division match-up.  The two teams duked it out in an exciting extra-innings barnburner that saw a new IHSA record set in the course of the game.  For the first time in an IHSA Softball contest, the two teams combined for a total of nine home runs as the Red Devils won 28-24 in eight innings.

The Red Devils were led by junior slugger Sarah Cook, who hit three home runs, bringing her season total to eight.  Also hitting the long ball for Murphysboro were Kearston Svanda, who had two homers, and Ayla Smith.

For the Tigers, Jersey Summers hit a pair of home runs while Branson Hill added in another.

There have been four instances in IHSA history that a game has seen eight home runs hit between two teams, the most recent happened on May 4, 2017 when Eastland (Lanark) beat Galena 7-1.

The Red Devils improve to 9-7 on the season, they are 6-1 in the SIRR Ohio Division.  The Tigers are 7-13 and 2-5 in conference.
