Thursday morning, Du Quoin High School announced their plans to rename their baseball field in honor of Don Stanhouse, a graduate of Du Quoin High School (Class of 1969) and former Major League Baseball All-Star closer.
The Indians will host Carmi-White County on Saturday, May 6th. The first game is scheduled for 10 a.m. In between games, a ceremony will be held.
Stanhouse was a standout baseball player for the Indians and also their quarterback on the football field. He was recruited by Missouri in football but passed up a full-ride scholarship to take a major league signing bonus instead.
“We are honored to have Mr. Stanhouse back at DHS and to name baseball field in his honor,” Du Quoin Athletic Director Derek Beard said. “Don Stanhouse was a great high school athlete. Not only a great baseball player, but a great quarterback and basketball player as well. We are looking forward to having him back at DHS and recognizing him for his achievements at DHS and his Major League Baseball career.”
Stanhouse pitched for the Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, and Montreal Expos from 1972-1979, played part of 1980 with the Dodgers before missing all of the 1981 season. He had a brief comeback with the Orioles in 1982 before ultimately retiring.
He was an All-Star in 1979. Stanhouse posted 408 strikeouts and 64 saves in his career.
