Zeigler woman credited with saving 2 lives in house fire

ZEIGLER, Ill. (WJPF) – A Zeigler woman is being credited with saving two lives after she alerted her next door neighbors that their house was on fire.

The Zeigler Fire Department says Sheri Slomka called 9-1-1 a few minutes after 12:00 a.m. Sunday telling dispatchers her neighbor’s deck was on fire and the flames were spreading quickly to the single-wide trailer at 126 Oak Street. After getting off the phone with 9-1-1, Slomka woke up her neighbors, a father and his 3-year-old son. The smoke from the fire outside had not yet triggered the indoor alarms and the two were sound asleep.

Firefighters got the scene under control in about 15 minutes. The two occupants of the home were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but declined further treatment. The fire is under investigation.
