NWS: 4 tornados touched down Wednesday

(WJPF) – Preliminary surveys by the National Weather Service indicate that four tornados touched down Wednesday in southern Illinois.

The strongest was an EF-1 that hit near the Jackson County community of Cora at 12:01 p.m. With peak winds of 108 miles per hour, the twister destroyed a couple of small barns and a carport. The National Weather Service says one person was injured in this storm, although the severity of the injuries is not known.

An EF-1 tornado touched down at 3:10 p.m. southeast of Carbondale and stayed on the ground for nearly 5 miles. Some buildings received roof damage.

At 4:04 p.m., an EF-0 tornado touched town in the Lake of Egypt Area, mainly resulting in tree damage

At 4:13 p.m., An EF-1 tornado, with winds estimated at 95 miles per hour, touched down near Carrier Mills. A few homes and barns had minor roof damage and one home was slightly shifted off its foundation.
