Handgun, stolen from Chicago area, recovered in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill. (WJPF) – A 19-year-old, armed with a handgun  stolen from the Chicago area, was arrested over the long Labor Day weekend in Carbondale.

According to Carbondale Police, Tommie Garner was part of a large crowd that had gathered in the 700 block of East Grand Avenue around 1:30 a.m. Monday.  When a fight broke out in the crowd, Carbondale Police say officers tried to separate those involved and that’s when Garner began to fight with the police.  CPD says Garner made threats toward police officers and attempted to pull away from officers while he reached toward the waistband of his pants.  The stolen pistol was later found in his possession.

Tommie Garner has charged with aggravated unlawful use of weapons, possession of a stolen firearm, unlawful possession of firearm and firearm ammunition, resisting a peace officer, and threatening a public official.  Garner was denied pre-trial release.  His next court appearance is scheduled for October 1, 2024.
