Cairo man convicted in Carbondale murder

MURPHYSBORO, Ill. (WJPF) – A man has been convicted for a 2022 Carbondale murder.

In October 2022, 18-year-old Jacob Gary was fatally shot in the back when a fight broke out during Carbondale’s unofficial Halloween street party.

The man who prosecutors say pulled the trigger, 23-year-old Daurice Morse of Cairo, evaded law enforcement for 5 months after the killing. He was eventually captured by the U.S. Marshall’s Service.

Daurice Morse was convicted Thursday of first degree murder following a bench trial in Jackson County. He faces between 45 years and life in prison.
